THE HARSH TRUTH ABOUT BEING SHREDDED – WORTH IT OR NOT?

Being Shredded is often seen as the ultimate fitness goal toned muscles, low body fat, and a look that turns heads. But as amazing as it sounds, being shredded has its downsides. While there are undeniable benefits, there are also some big drawbacks that most people don’t talk about. So, is being shredded really worth it? Here’s my personal take on the pros and cons of being shredded, based on my own journey over the years.

What you will learn in this article:

The Dual Intervention Point Model: Why Comfort Zones Matter

For me, my body feels most comfortable within a range of 8–20% body fat. For you, it could look completely different. Some people feel great with a lower percentage, while others thrive at a slightly higher range.

This concept aligns with the dual intervention point model, which suggests that your body has an upper and lower boundary for body fat, rather than a single “set point.” Within this range, your body operates at its best, as long as you don’t cross those boundaries.

A Bit About Me

Before jumping into the pros and cons, here are two important things to know about me:

I’m a Hardgainer:

Even at 40, I can get lean by slightly reducing my calorie intake and working out three times a week no extra cardio or extreme methods required. Building muscle has always been challenging for me, but losing fat and getting shredded has been relatively easy.

I Don’t Train Like a Bodybuilder:

My training focuses on strength, technique, balance, and mobility. While I still build muscle, my routine isn’t optimized for hypertrophy. Despite this, I’ve managed to achieve a lean and aesthetic look that works for me.

The Upsides of Being Shredded

Let’s start with the good stuff! There are some great reasons why being shredded feels rewarding, both physically and mentally.

You Look Lean and Muscular

Being shredded makes a big visual impact. For someone like me who’s more of a hardgainer (it’s tough for me to build muscle, but losing fat is easier), lower body fat means I look more defined even without a lot of mass. Even at a lower muscle mass, being shredded and staying under 10% body fat can make you look muscular and athletic.

It’s a Big Achievement

Let’s be honest, getting shredded isn’t easy. It takes discipline, especially with temptations like fast food and sweets all around us. Sticking to a clean diet and reaching that goal is a massive achievement that shouldn’t be underestimated.

Yes, it can feel like a punishment, but when you finally reach that shredded look, the sense of accomplishment is worth it.

Confidence Boost

Looking good naturally gives you confidence, but there’s more to it than just appearance. Knowing you worked hard, kept discipline, and achieved something challenging boosts your self-esteem. And trust me, others can feel that energy it’s a confidence that shows.

A Calisthenics Advantage

This one’s specific to calisthenics. When you’re shredded, you’re carrying less body weight, so certain calisthenics skills become a bit easier. For example, advanced moves like the One-Arm Pull-Up, Front Lever, Back Lever, Planche, and Human Flag all require immense strength-to-weight balance. Even a small weight drop can make a huge difference in achieving these difficult moves.

The Downsides of Being Shredded

Now, let’s get into the reality check. Being shredded may look amazing, but it comes with a price: physically and mentally.

Lower Energy Levels

One big downside I’ve experienced is a noticeable drop in energy. When I’m shredded for an extended period, I feel more tired overall, and my workout recovery time is longer. I’m not able to push as hard as usual, and it can feel like I’m always running on empty.

Weaker Immune System

Low body fat combined with a low-calorie intake can impact the immune system. When I stay shredded for too long, I notice that I get sick more often. Research links low energy intake and low body fat to higher cortisol levels, which can weaken the immune system, making you more susceptible to colds or illness.

The “Starved” Look

This one might sound strange, but it’s true. When I’m at my leanest, my body looks strong, but my face takes on a gaunt or “starved” appearance. While I look great during workouts or when flexing, my face looks drawn and less healthy, which isn’t ideal.

Losing Muscle Mass

Being shredded means being in a caloric deficit, and when you’re not taking in enough calories. Your body doesn’t have the fuel to build or even maintain muscle.

While it’s possible to keep some muscle mass while lean, prolonged calorie deficits make it challenging especially if you’re a natural lifter. Personally, I notice my muscle mass drops when I stay shredded for too long.

Additional Side Effects of Being Shredded

Apart from these main pros and cons, there are some other side effects that can vary from person to person. Here are a few that others experience, although they haven’t all applied to me personally:

  • Constant Hunger: Being in a calorie deficit often means feeling hungry, which can turn into constant cravings.
  • Mood Swings: Low body fat and calorie intake can lead to irritability and mood changes.
  • Disrupted Sleep: Some people report sleep issues when maintaining very low body fat.
  • Reduced Libido: Low testosterone levels, common in calorie deficits, can affect sex drive.
  • Feeling Cold: Some experience a constant chill due to low body fat.
  • Menstrual Disruptions: For women, very low body fat can affect the menstrual cycle, leading to potential fertility issues.

So, Is Being Shredded Worth It?

Looking at all the pros and cons, I personally don’t think it’s worth being shredded all year round. Yes, I love the look, and I enjoy the sense of accomplishment. But being shredded for too long takes a toll on energy, muscle growth, immune health, and overall wellbeing. If your goal is to get shredded, I say go for it. Experience it, enjoy the results, and be proud of what you achieve. But don’t feel pressured to maintain that low body fat year-round.

For most of us, a lean (but not shredded) look is easier to maintain, healthier, and less mentally draining. For me, that comfortable spot is around 10% body fat.
